Years ago, I came across advice from a famous writer who said he would stop his writing sessions at the start of a new or exciting idea. That way, when he returned to his desk, he could tap into that inspired momentum. Plenty of writers swear by this approach, and it’s a good one.
After trying it a few times, I found a way to make the practice my own by coining the phrase This Time/Next Time. I describe it in this video—during my treacherous dog walk with Percy and a hot coffee.
I love sharing this tool—this phrase, this habit, this mindset—with fellow writers. It’s been invaluable to me as I’ve juggled multiple projects, jobs, and children over the years. This single tool will help you keep track of the thread of your project and cut down on sluggish writing sessions by providing you with a short cut to the spark that ignites the fire you’re craving.
Let me know what you think about the idea and let Storytellers Social Club know of any tools you find useful for staying connected to the work over time.
See you soon.
