Welcome to Storytellers Social Club!

This is a space for storytellers and story lovers, a space to connect, to share, to learn from each other and grow. The name reflects my desire to bring storytellers together—joyfully and socially, online and in-person.

All great storytellers — the novelist, the screenwriter, the poet, the journalist, the comedian—are after the same thing: truth. I like that.

And stories aren’t just written; they’re told around campfires, drawn as graphic novels, sung in songs, embodied by actors, and spun out of thin air by improvisers. Storytellers Social Club is intended to be a space for all of the above.

Storytellers are also in the business of making people feel things and that seems to have gotten more rare in recent years as we try to process an infinite amount of information in our finite time on earth. The Great Numbness.

I’ve come to suspect that people have been anesthetized by our culture. It can feel as if a nihilistic virus has taken hold, leaving many of us numb and helpless in the shadow of big tech and corrupt or ineffective politicians. Fuck that - feeling things is the best part.

Whether you sign up for free or upgrade to a paid subscription, you can count on me to share things I wish someone had shared with me long ago. I post on MOST but not all Tuesdays because that’s when Wimpy promised to pay for all those burgers. If you’re passionate about—or even just curious about—writing and storytelling, you’ll like what’s ahead.

The Future of Storytellers Social Club

Stories are described as empathy machines for their ability to expose us to ideas, experiences, and perspectives different from our own. My intention is to grow Storytellers Social Club into a formal nonprofit organization—one that can make the world more humane and joyful.

About me, Bill Gullo

I’m a longtime writer and teacher of writers. I’ve written, directed, and/or produced a variety of projects—features, pilots, short films, web series, a musical for the stage - all sorts of stuff - including some (unpublished) fiction and even organizational writing in the nonprofit sector. Learn more about me here.

Over the years, I’ve invented tools, adapted tips, and discovered states of mind that help me imagine, develop and write powerful stories. I’ve taught screenwriting and serial storytelling to students at NYU and Pratt Institute, I’ve run storytelling workshops and given advice to countless clients. My experience led me to launch This Time/Next Time, a story consulting service for storytellers of all kinds.

Kind Words from Collaborators, Clients & Colleagues

Bill seems to know just the right questions to ask me about character and plot to help spur on my own writing, while also delivering very concrete ideas for specific story points and dialogue. —Bart Freundlich, Writer/Director (After the Wedding, Myth of Fingerprints)

In a moment where every writer is told to have their own niche, Bill defies this Hollywood compartmentalization as a truly skilled, well-rounded screenwriter, able to inhabit and excel in every genre. Bill is a rare find. —Michael B. Clark, Partner & Head of Production, Beachside

I have worked with countless talented film and television writers in my career, but few have the ability to truly rewrite themselves. Bill is one of those rare exceptions who understands tone, character, and structure so well that he can objectively deconstruct his own words and rebuild a story over and over again until it's exactly right. —Annie Marter, Producer, Fortunate Jack

Working alongside Bill on our Screenwriter Sessions has been a privilege. As the leader of a cohort of 35 writers, Bill consistently demonstrates an intuitive understanding of the exact direction needed to propel the group forward and his ability to provide feedback and individual direction is nothing short of astute. His dedication to fostering growth and creativity within the group is inspiring, and I have personally witnessed the transformative impact he has had on countless writers. —Mystelle Brabbee, Executive Director, Nantucket Film Festival
